The three main areas of casual employment with NSW Sport and Recreation:


Holiday camp staff

Our holiday programs are offered to school age students during the NSW school holidays and are known as either Kids’ Camps or Family Camps.

There are three levels of holiday staff that provide pastoral care and support to participants while they are on these programs.

Assistant Camp Counsellor

The Assistant Camp Counsellor is responsible for assisting the Camp Counsellors in providing pastoral care and supervision of the participants enrolled in our holiday camps. Assistant Camp Counsellor’s witness first hand what is required of a Camp Counsellor, with the intent of learning best practise for their progression to the Camp Counsellor role.

To become an Assistant Camp Counsellor you must be 18 years of age, have completed a minimum of four years of secondary school and are no longer attending school. You will be required to attend an introductory training weekend before you will be able to apply for holiday camp work.

Camp Counsellor

The Camp Counsellor supervises and engages participants throughout the camp program, fostering a positive, inclusive, safe and fun environment. They ensure that Assistant Camp Counsellor’s have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities while performing their duties at the Centre.

To become a Camp Counsellor you must have met the requirements of the Assistant Camp Counsellor role, successfully complete all CORE activities assessments, hold a current Bronze Medallion qualification (or equivalent), hold a current resuscitation award and first aid qualification and have received a recommendation for progression from Assistant Camp Counsellor to Camp Counsellor.

Senior Camp Counsellor

The Senior Camp Counsellor is responsible for assisting the Program Coordinator in the daily running of the camp and the management and training of all the Assistant Camp Counsellor’s and Camp Counsellor’s at the Centre.

To become a Senior Camp Counsellor you must meet all the requirements of a Camp Counsellor, have attended a minimum of six holiday programs as a Camp Counsellor and received two recommendations from different senior staff at different Centres, and have experience in training, assessing and accrediting holiday staff. You would also need to display a developed understanding of NSW Sport and Recreation policies and philosophy relating to holiday programs.

Program staff (Instructional)

Program staff are responsible for the development and delivery of outcomes-based programs utilising fun and inclusive activities at our Centres. They facilitate activities on holiday camp and community group programs, however, they largely deliver outcome-based outdoor education programs for schools during school terms.

Program officers

An applicant for this role must have completed a Cert IV in Outdoor Recreation or hold relevant tertiary qualifications, have appropriate knowledge, skills and experience in the delivery of outdoor recreational programs, and display the ability to work with diverse client groups as well as a commitment to high level customer service. There are two work modes within the Program Officer role:

  • Casual Program Officers
    If you have attained the necessary qualifications you may be eligible to gain employment on a casual basis with NSW Sport and Recreation. Interested people can apply for this position at any time of year – just call 13 13 02 to ask for a ‘Casual program staff employment package for new employees’. Successful applicants will be placed on the casual employee list which is used by the Centres.
  • Temporary Program Officers (up to full time employment)
    If there are ongoing staffing requirements throughout the year, individual Centres may approach staff and offer them positions on temporary contracts. A Program Officer may be appointed to a contract of up to 12 months without a merit-based interview.

Positions of more than 12 months will be advertised and selected through a formal recruitment process. Staff are appointed on merit.

Program Coordinator

The Program Coordinator manages the coordination and development of a Centre’s programs, services and staffing requirements. They supervise, provide direction to and ensure the continuing professional development of program staff and contribute to the delivery of programs and services.

Please note: prior to receiving an offer of employment from NSW Sport and Recreation you must have participated in a NSW Sport and Recreation Child Protection presentation, have signed and submitted all relevant forms (e.g. child protection, code of conduct, proof of identification). A criminal record check and have received a clearance before you will be appointed.

Swimming instructor

NSW Sport and Recreation employ casual swimming instructors for our annual Swimsafe Learn to Swim program from November to February each year. 

Swimsafe has three programs designed for specific age groups: school age children, pre-school children and adults.

The Swimsafe program is designed to:

  • develop water confidence and safety, swimming and survival skills and recreational enjoyment of the water
  • develop sound, correct and efficient swimming techniques
  • teach survival and elementary rescue techniques
  • encourage the integration of participants with disabilities into Swimsafe programs.

Employment is available to instructors on a casual basis.

All Swimsafe instructors must hold a current AUSTSWIM certificate, a current resuscitation certificate and be over 18 years of age.
