Boxing and kickboxing are the largest professional combat sports in New South Wales and the industry is regulated under the Boxing and Wrestling Control Act, 1986.
The Act provides for the establishment of the Boxing Authority of NSW to control and regulate the conduct of professional boxing events in this State.
The Act also sets out the requirements for registration of professional boxers and industry participants (promoters, matchmakers, managers, trainers, seconds, referees, judges and timekeepers). It further determines the conditions under which competitors can compete and events can be staged, restricting free entry into the industry and making participation conditional.
The Act also controls wrestling, amateur boxing and kick boxing through a permit system administered by NSW Sport and Recreation under Ministerial delegation.
Professional boxing is an inherently dangerous sport and the Boxing Authority of NSW was established under legislation to control and regulate the industry.
Registration of all boxers and industry participants together with permits to conduct promotions are required under the Act and can be obtained through NSW Sport and Recreation on behalf of the Boxing Authority.
NSW Sport and Recreation maintains a register of all professional boxers and industry participants and provides general assistance to the industry.
Permits are also required for the conduct of amateur boxing, kick boxing, amateur and professional wrestling through NSW Sport and Recreation which set out conditions of permit to conduct such events.
