Call for volunteers - Ski patrol needs you! Tuesday, 21 August 2007
The NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham West, and the Member for Monaro, Steve Whan, have called for volunteers to assist the NSW Ski Patrol.
Mr West is encouraging keen skiers to donate their expertise and time to the NSW Ski Patrol, one of Australia’s leading volunteer rescue organisations.
The NSW Ski Patrol provides an essential service for the thousands of people who visit the state’s snowfields each year. Volunteer ski patrollers perform an important safety and rescue role, complementing the work of professional ski patrollers on the slopes.
Widespread snow falls in the Snowy Mountains mean more people are hitting the slopes this year. Many people will be beginners who are unfamiliar with the terrain and may need extra help as they enjoy the snow. The NSW Ski Patrol Association is there to lend them a hand when they get into difficulty.
The Association and its five member patrols assist in the rescue of hundreds of injured skiers and snowboarders throughout the Snowy Mountains region including, the Perisher-Blue Ski Resort, Thredbo, Charlottes Pass and Mt Selwyn. They perform a remarkable feat considering the amount of terrain they have to cover and the relatively short ski season in NSW – around 15 weeks.
Over 300 men and women generously give their time to the NSW Ski Patrol. The Minister commended their dedication and the service they have been delivering since 1969.
