Fifteen reigning world champions and 10 Olympic champions will compete in the opening round of the 2007-2008 UCI Track World Cup Classics to be staged at Sydney’s Dunc Gray Velodrome from 30 November to 2 December.
The competition also represents the first step in bids to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
In possibly the most intense cycling contest ever seen in Sydney, the stars will battle it out in 17 events among the biggest field ever assembled for an international track competition— 395 cyclists from 48 nations.
“That’s fantastic for local sports fans who are going to be treated to an absolute feast of sporting excellence right here at home, said UCI Vice President Ray Godkin.
“It simply doesn’t get any better than this.”
Among Australia’s top talent will be 500m time trial world record holder Anne Mears (Team Toshiba), Kate Bates (T-Mobile) who won points race gold in Spain, and Olympic gold medallists Ryan Bayley (keirin and sprint), Graeme Brown (teams pursuit and madison) and Luke Roberts (teams pursuit).
