School camps

Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Centre is an hour’s drive from Orange, Mudgee and Dubbo on the foreshores of Lake Burrendong in the state’s central west. Conveniently located for visits to Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo’s Gaol, Wellington Caves, gold mining sites and Mudgee’s honey farm, it’s a great base for exploring aspects of Australia’s rich country heritage.

The centre’s bushland environment provides opportunities for exploring native flora and fauna, indigenous culture, aquatic ecosystems and astronomical wonders. Plus there’s the excitement of adventure activities like high and low ropes courses, grass skiing, rock climbing, flying fox, orienteering, canoeing and bivouac.

Our service to school groups includes an outstanding range of activities and a flexible consultative approach to program design.

School camps - challenge, experience and grow!

Primary schools

The usual excellent standard was given. The staff is probably the main reason we keep coming back. The kids had a ball and the food was excellent. Blaxland East Public School

The focus for primary school camps is the development of social skills and independence. A primary program promotes active and healthy lifestyles, introduces students to outdoor and environmental education, and is adapted to suit each group’s needs.

Programs are designed to meet the outcomes from Key Learning Areas, through activities suitable for primary-aged students such as archery, rock climbing, canoeing, fishing, ropes course, rafting, kayaking, initiatives and cookout.

Camp activities meet outcomes from the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education syllabus and promote skills associated with syllabus areas for Human Society and Its Environment.

Lake Burrendong Gold Rush

For years 5 and 6. An exciting adventure awaits school groups who choose a Lake Burrendong gold rush program to explore the HSIE Gold Unit.

Secondary schools

All students (were) exposed to a range of social situations, independent living and challenging outdoor activities. We all had a great time, the staff were friendly, helpful and very patient. Lithgow High School

Secondary school students participate in outdoor recreational activities while also addressing aspects of the syllabus, particularly in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

Promoting active and healthy lifestyles, the activities also help to broaden students’ choice of pursuits, hobbies and careers.

Activities popular with secondary students include grass skiing, kayaking, sailing, rafting, abseiling, and high ropes course.

Crossroads

Crossroads is a mandatory personal development and health education course for all Year 11 students in NSW government schools. It covers issues concerning relationships, sexual health and drugs. Activities and workshops facilitated by centre staff help students to reflect upon and share issues that are important to them.

Equipped for Life

Equipped for life personal leadership workshops develop living skills through experiential learning activities. Underlying themes include the importance of taking responsibility, setting goals and priorities, teamwork, cooperation and effective communication.

Peer support and orientation camps
To help in the transition from primary to high school, schools can incorporate activities available at Lake Burrendong with their peer support programs. Senior students run the leadership sessions and participate in activities with Year 7 students. Orientation camps can also be incorporated with peer support for new students.
