Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre is a rural retreat in the state’s north-west just 40 minutes’ drive from Tamworth. Nestled on Lake Keepit in the heart of pastoral and timber country, the Centre is around six hours from Sydney and four hours from Newcastle.
A camp at Lake Keepit makes the most of the great outdoors in magnificent big sky country. Overnight campouts are popular with visiting schools, as are activities that focus on the environment. Students can meet the local wildlife (including over 100 species of birds), fish for yellowbelly in the lake, or learn about the night sky.
A visit to Skywatch Observatory in Coonabarabran or Waterways Wildlife Park at Gunnedah can add an extra dimension to the Keepit experience.
The focus of primary school camps is the development of social skills and independence. A primary program promotes active and healthy lifestyles, introduces students to outdoor and environmental education, and is adaptable to suit each group’s needs.
Programs are designed to meet the outcomes from Key Learning Areas, through activities suitable for primary-aged students such as archery, rock climbing, canoeing, fishing, ropes course, raft-building, kayaking, initiatives and cookout.
Camp activities meet outcomes from the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education syllabus and promote skills associated with syllabus areas for Human Society and Its Environment.
We would once again like to thank you for the wonderful time had by both staff and students at Lake Keepit. Your enjoyment in your work provided the enthusiasm to encourage our students to participate in every activity that you presented to them. At no time did a student feel left out or unable to do any of the tasks Chris Ryan, Year 8 Advisor, Macintyre High School
Secondary school students participate in outdoor recreational activities while also exploring aspects of the syllabus.
Promoting active and healthy lifestyles, the activities also help to broaden students’ choice of pursuits, hobbies and careers.
Activities popular with secondary students include abseiling, orienteering, kayaking, rogaining, climbing, canoeing and ropes course.
To help in the transition from primary to high school, schools can incorporate activities available at Lake Keepit with their peer support programs. Senior students run the leadership sessions and participate in activities with Year 7 students. Orientation camps can also be incorporated with peer support for new students.
