School camps

The magic of Milson Island lies in its secluded location and rich history. Established more than 100 years ago, Milson Island has been used as a river trading post, veteran rehabilitation centre and jail, before its most recent incarnation as a sport and recreation centre.

Accessible only by ferry from Brooklyn or Kangaroo Point just north of Sydney, Milson Island has a smorgasbord of activities for school groups to enjoy. Sports lovers can enjoy fencing, tennis, basketball, kayaking, archery, canoeing and swimming. The beautiful natural island environment makes for picturesque bushwalking, orienteering and overnight camping experiences. For the adventurer there is rock-climbing abseiling and the challenge high ropes course.

Our service to school groups features a flexible consultative approach to program design. The centre can accommodate up to 167 campers and 10 staff at any one time.

School camps - challenge, experience and grow!

Primary schools

We wanted to thank you for the high level of professionalism and hard work you and your staff put into ensuring the success of our recent week long camp at Milson Island. As always we were most impressed with the friendly yet very professional assistance offered to us by all members of your staff. The children gained not only educationally but personally as a result of experiencing such thoughtful, friendly and understanding instructors and staff. Year 6 teachers, Carlingford Primary School

The focus for primary school camps is the development of social skills and independence. A primary program promotes active and healthy lifestyles, introduces students to outdoor and environmental education. Schools select the activities they feel will best suit their students’ needs.

Programs are designed to meet the outcomes from Key Learning Areas, through activities suitable for primary-aged students such as archery, rock climbing, canoeing, fishing, ropes course, fencing, rafting, kayaking, initiatives and cookout.

Camp activities meet outcomes from the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education syllabus and promote skills associated with syllabus areas for Human Society and Its Environment.

Secondary schools

Secondary school students participate in outdoor recreational activities while also addressing aspects of the syllabus, particularly in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

Promoting active and health lifestyles, the activities also help to broaden students’ choice of pursuits, hobbies and careers. We can make the activities as challenging as appropriate from an easy bushwalk to an overnight canoe trip in the wilderness.

Activities popular with secondary students include abseiling, kayaking, orienteering, overnight bivouac and challenge high ropes course.

Peer support and orientation camps

To help in the transition from primary to high school, schools can incorporate activities available at Milson Island with their peer support programs. Senior students run the leadership sessions and participate in activities with Year 7 students. Orientation camps can also be incorporated with peer support for new students.
