Evaluation of the Sport Rage Prevention Kit

Published: July 2008

Executive summary

NSW Sport and Recreation launched Sport rage prevention: A kit for club committees (the ‘kit’) to the sport industry in NSW at the end of 2006.

By April 2008, over 6,477 free kits had been ordered and distributed to sport clubs across NSW. In addition, 332,126 free resources such as brochures, posters, certificates, stickers and audio ground announcements had been ordered from the kit by clubs to assist in promoting positive sporting environments and to educate people about fair play.

Twelve months after the launch of the kit an evaluation process commenced to measure the initial impact of the kit at the grass roots level.

The process aimed to evaluate the influence of the kit on:

  • planning by sport club committees
  • adoption of sport rage prevention strategies
  • the confidence of committees in dealing with sport rage incidents
  • perceived cultural change within sport clubs.

The evaluation process took the form of a workshop with representatives of State sporting organisations (SSOs) and an online survey for club and association representatives.

The overall feedback from the evaluation process was very positive with the kit being very well-received by most sporting organisations.

Some highlights from this feedback were:

  • 87% of sporting organisations found the kit ‘useful’
  • nearly two-thirds (64%) had ‘introduced or improved a clear process’ for dealing with sport rage incidents
  • as a result of using the kit, 80% of organisations believed they were ‘more confident to deal with sport rage incidents
  • more than half the respondents believed that the kit had resulted in improved behaviour for players, parents/spectators and officials

The kit has also been recognised in several major industry awards, most recently winning the Gold Award at the NSW Sport Safety Awards in 2007.
