Sport and recreation funding by government

  • Funding for sport and recreation activities by all levels of government was more than $2 billion in 2000-01.
  • In terms of average funding per person this equates to $110 per person.
  • State and territory governments funded 41% ($875 million), with the majority of this funding being for special events ($452 million) and venues and sports grounds ($280 million).
  • Local governments provided 49% of sport and recreation funding ($1.05 billion in 2000-01), with most funds directed towards venues and sports grounds ($410 million), and recreation parks and waterways ($587 million).
  • The Commonwealth government provided $199 million, with $77 million for special events and $40 million for the regulation and control of sport, including funding of peak sporting associations.
  • During 2000-01 there was a major contribution of funding provided to the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, accounting for $72 million of Commonwealth funding and $382 million of funding by the NSW State Government.
  • Other important areas of sport and recreation funding by government included: $76 million to support clubs, teams and individuals to participate in sport and recreation; $51 million for coaching and training, including funding for the Australian Institute of Sport and sport institutes in each state and territory; and $23 million for horse and dog racing
