Participation in exercise, recreation and sport in NSW, 2003

All sport and physical activity:

  • 4,255,000 people (just over 4 million) participated in sport and physical activity in 2003 in NSW
  • this was a participation rate of 81.5% ( 4 out of every 5 people aged 15 and over participated in sport or physical in the 12 months in 2003)
  • this was an increase of 7.2% from the previous year’s participation rate of 76%

NSW had the 6th highest participation rate behind ACT (88.7%), Victoria (84.6%), WA (84.4%), NT (83.1%),SA (82.5%) and ahead of Tasmania (80.7%) and Queensland (80.1%).

Top sports/physical activities in NSW were:

  1. Walking (other than bushwalking) – 36.0%
  2. Swimming – 17.5%
  3. Aerobics/fitness – 16.2%
  4. Tennis – 9.8%
  5. Golf – 8.4%
  6. Cycling – 7.7%
  7. Running – 7.1%
  8. Bushwalking – 6.8%
  9. Soccer (outdoor) – 5.3%
  10. Touch football – 3.6%

Participation decreases with age:

  • 15 - 24 years - 89.5%
  • 25 - 34 years – 86.1%
  • 35 - 44 years – 81.5%
  • 45 - 54 years – 78.4%
  • 55 - 64 years – 76.3%
  • 65 years and over – 74.6%

More males participate than females – 83.2% for all males aged 15 and over compared to 79.8% females

Organised (a) sport in NSW:

  • 2,170,900 people participated in organised sport in 2003
  • this was a participation rate of 41.6%

NSW was 7th out of all states and territories behind ACT (48.3%), Victoria (45.3%) ,NT (45.1%), SA (43.4%) and Tasmania (42.0%) and ahead of Qld (39.6%).

  • (a) ‘Organised’ sports are those that were organized in full or part by a club, association or other type of organization.
