Youth Taking the Pledge, North Coast

Background

The project focused on educating Years 5-7students in Kempsey on aspects of good sporting behaviour.

Linked to the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum, the project saw students taking a pledge to be fair whilst watching and playing sport.

Strategies

A curriculum resource including lesson plans on Sportsmanship, Taking the Pledge, Fair Play in Action and Officiating Youth Sport was developed and is presently being used in four schools – Kempsey High School, St Paul’s College, West Kempsey Public and South Kempsey Public.

The resource was officially launched at South Kempsey Public School in September 2004. Project partners included the Department of Education and Training and the ATSIC Many Rivers Regional Council.

Highlights of the pilot

The project has resulted in a useful resource for teachers in senior primary and junior high school. Part of the program allows students to role play and participate as referees, scorers, players, coaches and parents giving them the opportunity to experience sport from another perspective.

Outcome

Two schools completed teaching the resource in Term 3, 2004. They are currently being surveyed and the results are expected to be completed by the end of Term 4, 2004. One other school has the resource and will start teaching the program in Term 1, 2005.
