School camps

With state-of-the-art sporting facilities, the Sydney Academy is particularly appropriate for school sport, music and other special interest camps.

Its location means easy access to Sydney attractions such as the zoo, beaches, the Opera House and museums. Visitors from country areas often include a day trip in their school camp program, and the academy can provide coach transport and packed lunches for these days.

Set on the Narrabeen Lakes on Sydney’s northern beaches, the academy’s location is a treasure trove of natural beauty perfect for any type or size of school group.

I have been bringing schools to participate in outdoor education programs at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation for over 22 years. I’m always impressed by the professionalism of the teaching staff and the attitude they have towards the children, the quality of the program, the comfortable accommodation and the amount and quality of the food. Chris Dougherty, Principal, Morgan Street Primary School

Primary schools

The focus of primary school camps is the development of social skills and independence. A primary program promotes active and healthy lifestyles, introduces students to outdoor and environmental education, and is adaptable to suit each group’s needs.

Programs are designed to meet the outcomes from Key Learning Areas, through activities suitable for primary-aged students such as archery, challenge ropes course, canoeing, sailing, abseiling, coastal studies, bushwalking, bivouacs, cookouts and orienteering.

Camp activities meet outcomes from the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education syllabus and promote skills associated with syllabus areas for Human Society and Its Environment.

Secondary schools

Secondary school students participate in outdoor recreational activities while also exploring aspects of the syllabus, especially in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.

Promoting active and healthy lifestyles, the activities also help to broaden students’ choice of pursuits, hobbies and careers. Activities popular with secondary students include challenge ropes course, sailing, abseiling, bushwalking, bivouacs, orienteering, initiative tasks and team building activities.

Sport science

Students test their physical skills while exploring aspects of the PDHPE syllabus. Half-day or two-day residential programs are available.

Crossroads

Crossroads is a mandatory personal development and health education course for all Year 11 students in NSW government schools. It covers issues concerning relationships, sexual health and drugs. Activities and workshops facilitated by centre staff help students to reflect upon and share issues that are important to them.

Study skills

A study skills program can be complemented with outdoor education activities that reinforce key themes. Through experiential learning activities, games and discussions, the study skills course covers time management, planning and priorities, motivation, goal setting, study techniques and exam preparation.

Equipped for Life

Equipped for life personal leadership workshops develop living skills through experiential learning activities. Underlying themes include the importance of taking responsibility, setting goals and priorities, teamwork, cooperation and effective communication.

Peer support and orientation camps

To help in the transition from primary to high school, schools can incorporate activities available at the academy with their peer support programs. Senior students run the leadership sessions and participate in activities with year seven students. Orientation camps may also be incorporated with peer support for new students.
