AUSTSWIM Teacher of swimming and water safety

This course aims to develop positive attitudes and competencies to teach swimming and water safety in swimming pools and confined shallow water venues. At the completion of the course, candidates are recognised as being able to teach swimming and water safety to persons of at least four years of age to adults.

Prerequisites

Candidates can take part in the course from 16 years but will not be issued with the qualification until they are 17 years of age. To receive the qualification candidates must also hold a current resuscitation award.

Topics

The course is conducted over two days and includes the following theory and practical assessment components.

  • Overview of Austswim and the aquatic industry
  • Legal responsibilities for the Austswim teacher
  • How people learn
  • Being an effective teacher
  • Aquatic safety, survival and rescue skills
  • Principles of movement in water
  • Water familiarisation, buoyancy, mobility and safety
  • Teaching safer diving skills
  • Towards efficient stroke development
  • Planning, delivering and reviewing a lesson.

Assessment

Assessment at the course:

  • Aquatic sequence to assess that candidates are comfortable and confident in the aquatic environment.

Assessment after the course:

  • Theory exam (to be completed within 60 days of course completion, and can be completed online)
  • Practical swimming teaching experience and teaching competency assessment (to be completed within 12 months of course completion).

If minimum numbers are not reached, the course will be cancelled and full refund given.

Booking terms and conditions

  1. The fee must accompany the enrolment, otherwise the enrolment will not be accepted.
  2. Enrolment is necessary prior to the commencement of the program to secure your place.
  3. A receipt confirming the details of your booking will be issued after payment has been received.
Refunds
  1. If a request for a refund is made within five (5) working days of the program commencement, no refund of program fees will be given (including GST).
  2. If a request for a refund is made (and a written request received) five (5) working days or more prior to the program commencement, a refund will be given less a 20% administration fee of the total program fee (including GST).
  3. Refunds will not be given for partial attendance.
  4. Refunds will be paid at the completion of the program.
Program cancellations

Communities NSW reserves the right to cancel a program/s. Every effort will be made to give reasonable notice to those who have enrolled when a program is cancelled. Those enrolled will be given a full refund.
