AUSTSWIM Teacher of swimming and water safety

This course provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to persons from four years of age to adults in swimming pools and confined natural shallow water venues. The certificate is valid for three years.

Course content

Theory and practical sessions

  • Overview of Austswim and the aquatic industry
  • Legal responsibilities for the Austswim teacher
  • How people learn
  • Being an effective teacher
  • Aquatic safety, survival and rescue skills
  • Principles of movement in water
  • Water familiarisation, buoyancy, mobility and safety
  • Teaching safe diving skills
  • Towards efficient stroke development
  • Plan, deliver and review a lesson.

Assessment

To gain the award, the following assessment components must be satisfactorily completed within 12 months of the course commencement date.

  • On-line theory assessment (completed after completing the course)
  • Continuous aquatic sequence, i.e. practical – demonstrating safe entry into pool, floating/swimming skills and safe exit from pool
  • Practical demonstration of teaching skills, including the preparation of lesson plans
  • Demonstrate competence in water safety techniques.

Please note: All Austswim accredited instructors must hold an up-to-date CPR certificate. Certificate is valid for 12 months.

Re-registration

Austswim teachers are required to re-register the Austswim certificate by the expiry date on their Austswim card. A minimum of 10 hours from professional development hours is required for re-registration.

Applying to become a Swimsafe instructor
Each year our team of 400 instructors delivers Swimsafe programs all over the state. Applications are now being accepted to work for Swimsafe in the upcoming season. For information or an application please phone (02) 6618 0400.

  • Dates: 13 and 14 February, 2010 how to enrol
  • Time: 9.30am - 5pm each day
  • Venue: Casino Memorial Pool
  • Cost: $340. CPR option available Saturday 5.30pm – 7.30pm at each venue CPR full – $60

Bring writing materials, swimming costume, swimming goggles, towel, snacks, lunch and warm clothing. CPR option available Saturday from 5.30pm - 7.30pm.

  • By phone: Call (02) 6618 0400 . If this course has an enrolment cost, please have your credit card details ready (Visa, Mastercard).
  • By fax: Complete the enrolment form and fax to (02) 6687 4175. For courses that have an enrolment cost please ensure you include your credit card details for payment.
  • By mail: Complete the enrolment form and if this course has an enrolment cost, include your credit card details, a cheque or money order. Mail to: NSW Sport and Recreation, PO Box 121, Lennox Head NSW 2478.
  • In person: Visit Lennox Head NSW 2478 or your closest office.

Booking terms and conditions

  1. The fee must accompany the enrolment, otherwise the enrolment will not be accepted.
  2. Enrolment is necessary prior to the commencement of the program to secure your place.
  3. A receipt confirming the details of your booking will be issued after payment has been received.
Refunds
  1. If a request for a refund is made within five (5) working days of the program commencement, no refund of program fees will be given (including GST).
  2. If a request for a refund is made (and a written request received) five (5) working days or more prior to the program commencement, a refund will be given less a 20% administration fee of the total program fee (including GST).
  3. Refunds will not be given for partial attendance.
  4. Refunds will be paid at the completion of the program.
Program cancellations

Communities NSW reserves the right to cancel a program/s. Every effort will be made to give reasonable notice to those who have enrolled when a program is cancelled. Those enrolled will be given a full refund.
